Hydro One’s goal in re-imagining their physical workspace was to transform both their physical environment and their corporate culture to assert a fresh, dynamic and resilient new image. It was imperative to Hydro One that the interior design of their new space be used to motivate their employees, contribute to a shift in corporate attitude and culture, and foster cross-talk between generations to support increased student-mentor relationships.
A sense of awareness, inclusion across departments, and the transparent relay of information were essential to include throughout the new space. Mayhew developed solutions that met the LEED Silver standard and enhancing employee wellbeing through sit/stand spaces, access to natural light, 90% views, zero VOC paint finishes, and air quality testing. Additionally, Hydro One understood that technology is the key to bridging the gap between generations in the modern workspace, and also the key to increasing connectivity with their satellite offices across Ontario, internal departments and teams. Along with the integration of new technology and branding, Hydro One also wanted to remain committed to their corporate history and foundations by integrating important historical company artifacts into an innovative design.
The project encompassed a moderate budget, and did not include lavish finishes or ornate details as per Hydro One’s vision; the space was not to read as high-end, but rather, relatable and inviting to their employees every day.
