Mitchell Plastics is a leading supplier of functional and decorative plastic parts for vehicle interiors. They had outgrown their existing facility in Kitchener and were in the planning stages of constructing a new technical centre and corporate headquarters right next door. The new building included an elaborate central atrium, two storey lobby with elevator and skylights that filled the entire space with natural light. Working in collaboration with the building’s Architect, Mayhew’s design process included developing the interior offices spaces within the umbrella of the building’s existing design.
Inspired by the parts that Mitchell Plastics designs and manufactures, the interior design elements within the space were strategically selected and refined to echo the brand by using scale, colour, pattern and texture. The majority of the walls were a crisp white amongst a fresh palette of colour and materials reflective of the automotive industry. Simplistic white work stations with raw metal cabinets, classic lounge seating with pops of colour, large scale industrial accent lighting and floor finishes mimicking a tire tread all contributed to a successful minimalist design. A custom designed reception desk and parts display cabinet complemented the elegance of the grand lobby.
In the end the design team successfully created an innovative and refreshing workspace all within a showpiece headquarters that truly captured the culture of Mitchell Plastics.
