GSK needed their new space to follow UK workplace standards. This means that they had to have an eight to ten ratio of desks, no assigned seating, and no individual offices. The open collaborative concept had to be paired up with support spaces in close proximity such as, meeting spaces of various sizes, enclaves and telephone rooms, to allow for heads down work as well as team work. As this project was considered a major renovation, Mayhew had to bring the existing washrooms up to current code. All of these factors brought together an innovative design that focused on meeting GSK’s criteria of open concept collaborative space, while still providing needed private spaces.
The final design broke away from GSK’s dated architecture, style choices and colour scheme. In addition to providing the standards to redesign their collaborative space, Mayhew presented GSK with a fresh palette that is inviting and speaks their brand. It is a new approach on workplace that is meant to break away from the cramped, darkness of its former self, and open up collaborative space, welcoming people in to an inviting, refreshed workspace.
